The Miraculous The Miraculous: New York
93. 404 East 14th Street
A young couple (he is a sculptor, she has given up painting to help her husband by sewing his cloth and vinyl sculptures) find themselves living in a very noisy building. To ensure that they can always get a good night’s sleep they build three bedrooms in their loft. When their landlord, a painter who also fancies himself a jazz musician, starts practicing his saxophone they move for the night to the other end of their loft, but when a hard-living sculptor and his girlfriend move into the building that area also becomes noisy. Their third bedroom has to contend with an artist neighbor who ceaselessly plays The Beatles’ song “Michelle” while she works on her paintings and sculptures which are covered with thousands of closely spaced dots. By contrast, another artist, who only visits his studio in the building for a few hours every day, doesn’t make a sound. Mystified by his behavior, they pay him a visit and discover that all he does each day is to paint a date (year, month and day) on a small canvas and hang it on the wall.
