In Memoriam Remembering Tim Rollins

As 2017 slipped into 2018, we heard of the death of Tim Rollins, artist, friend, teacher, mentor, and spiritual sibling to many. While alive, Rollins’s legacy was the subject of countless books, documentary films, exhibitions, symposia, and class room lectures. After all, his work with K.O.S. in the South Bronx pioneered social practice before there was such a thing—but for many, the loss is personal in ways we at the Brooklyn Rail thought fit to honor. While the art will continue to be made by K.O.S., the memories shared here are fleeting but by no means definitive; merely the beginning of a collective call—a testament to the question Tim raised when asked “HOW DO YOU DO IT? I’M SO BURNT OUT!”
