VI. Grillin’ at the Beach
Most barbecues around Brooklyn take place in inconspicuous backyards, with friends and neighbors keeping to themselves amidst the smoky aroma of grilled meats. In Manhattan Beach, though, crowds come to grill and mingle along the beach, conjuring up huge weekend food fests for everyone around to see, smell, and, if you’re lucky, taste. The picnic tables, only a few feet apart, host diverse parties from all over Brooklyn (and beyond) who come either to celebrate family and friends or to escape them. Here and there one can find noshes particular to a foreign cuisine, but in this beachside melting pot meat on a skewer is a universal treat, especially after it’s been marinated for 24 hours.

I work at a bar that was recently named best neighborhood bar in N.Y.C. by the NY Times Magazine. While I agree that it deserves the title, I am not exactly sure which neighborhood it belongs toSouth Slope? Greenwood Heights? Sunset Park? I thus felt compelled to dive into some bars deeply intertwined with their own distinct neighborhood (Sheepshead Bay).

80. (Brighton Beach; Plainfield, New Jersey; 11 West 53rd Street)
By Raphael RubinsteinNOV 2021 | The Miraculous
After her father is killed in an anti-Semitic pogrom, an 8-year-old girl emigrates with her mother from the Ukraine to New York City. Its only long after, at the age of 45, that she begins to paint, using, among other materials and tools, enamel paint and glass pipettes from her husbands costume jewelry business. Working with these unconventional means she develops a novel method of painting that involves dispersing fluid drips and pours of paint across the entire canvas. Her studio is a few square feet on the parquet floor of the Brighton Beach apartment she shares with her husband and son. Thanks in large part to the actions of her son, her work attracts the attention of several avant-garde refugees from Europe (two of whom pay visits to her in Brooklyn) and other people interested in primitive art.
Two Friends
By Freddy GomezAPRIL 2022 | Field Notes
I have two friends. One is named Petro. Without warning, he left Paris and his job as a construction worker to return to his native Ukraine. This was a few days before Putin's special operation. He went just like that, to be with his family, in case they needed him. The other friend is named Oleg. An older student in his spare time, he earns his living as a waiter in a Russian restaurant in Paris. I learned from him that Petro had left. Worried, he wanted to know if I had heard from Petro. I didn't have any news. I had put Oleg and Petro in contact with each other a few years ago.
