My Vagina Says Hey
My vagina says “hey”
My vagina
“hey”
like a hey that gives me hope
hello?
“hey”
it comes
quick as that
soft
“hey”
insistent
“hey”
like listen there’s more
there’s more listen
“hey”
my vagina
like an uneven heart
ready
for the unexpected guest at 3 am
“hey”
hello?
and I look in every mirror
checking lips
wondering if they’re too dry
too chapped
somewhere a stain
some clutter that could fall out
embarrass me
“hey!”
oh
“hey!”
shhhhhhhhh
hope not and he
is remembering by now the last time
we did this in secret
wondering if he will
stay longer this time
“hey”
not now
“hey”
oh god
“hey”
like an endless purple haze
or walking down a hallway that
looks long from drugs
you are leaning away from
“hey”
I remember the Beethoven
you will play the Beethoven
she said it
such authority in her voice
no lovers even
though she had been married long ago
mother said
that it was better
to have loved and lost
than to have never
loved at all
rides home
in her VW Bug
I would fill up
with grateful smiles and run
the rest of the driveway hopeful that I would quit piano
someday and have one great love
“hey”
not that, I know
“hey”
something else, and then
“hey”
like I am ready
oh
like I have a badge
recognize me now.
hey
my vagina says hey.

Ben Okri & Mónica Ojeda
By Yvonne C. GarrettFEB 2022 | Books
These two very different tales share few themes beyond the nascent power of young girls and a characterization of the natural world as essential in understanding our own humanity. Where Booker Prize winner Ben Okris (The Famished Road) magically graceful environmental fairy tale is full of light and hope, Mónica Ojedas Jawbone is rife with gothic body horror and the darkness of the jungle and within ourselves.
Marcia Resnick: As It Is or Could Be
By Ksenia SobolevaMAY 2022 | ArtSeen
Resnick’s portraits of iconic figures such as Sontag, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kathy Acker, and Gary Indiana, among others, have become well-known documents of a much-romanticized period in the history of New York. Yet few are familiar with the photographer’s multifaceted and wide-ranging practice beyond these portraits, something the curators of this retrospective, Resnick’s first ever, hope to change.

Rereading Nietzsches Twilight of the Gods, with its great declaration of war, whether with a hammer or a tuning fork, on universal idols, I thought immediatelyand irrelevantlyof Barack Obama. When this charismatic leader first came on the political scene, I was dazzled. A presidential candidate who fused the legacies of White Kansas (his mother) and Black Africa (his father), a presidential candidate who had published two serious booksDreams from my Father and The Audacity of Hopeand had actually read Kafka and Dostoevsky, a brilliant law student who became the first Black president of the Harvard Law review and whom the famous law professor Lawrence Tribe called the most impressive student I have ever taught.
